What is a Crown?

A dental crown is a restoration that is designed to look, feel, and function the same as a natural, healthy tooth. A traditional crown works best when covering a vulnerable tooth with a healthy root. Crowns supported by dental implants use one implant post to restore a missing tooth from root to crown.

When Would I Need a Crown?

Dental crown and toothDental crowns are very versatile. This means they can be used with a wide variety of other procedures to treat many issues, including:

  • Restoring a severely chipped, cracked, or fractured tooth
  • Attaching a dental bridge
  • Protecting a tooth weakened by a large filling
  • Replacing a single missing tooth when connected to one dental implant
  • Strengthening a worn or vulnerable tooth
  • Enhancing the shade of a severely discolored tooth
  • Preserving a tooth’s structure after a root canal

What is a Bridge and When Would I Need One?

3d render of teeth with dental bridgeWhile a dental bridge is made up of two or three crowns, they work differently. Bridges are best for replacing one to four missing teeth in a row. They are specially made to bridge the gap between healthy teeth and those which are lost. The gaps left by missing teeth can lead to an improper bite, TMJ disorders, gum disease, and poor digestion. Bridges help address these complications by replacing missing teeth for good.

These restorations can either use two natural teeth as the anchor for support or can be attached to two or more dental implants for a permanent and secure foundation.

Which Option is Right for Me?

Our Washington Square dentists will examine your smile and determine which option is best for your needs. During your visit, we will discuss your treatment needs and concerns, aesthetic goals, and your current oral health. These factors greatly contribute to the type of restoration option you will receive. Consultations allow us to give you an accurate diagnosis and suggest treatment recommendations that best align with your situation.

What Happens During Crown and Bridge Placement?

matching colour of the tooth enamel with whitening chartYour crown or bridge placement begins with the shaping of targeted teeth. This preparation removes extra enamel so  your restoration fits over your tooth properly. Then, impressions are taken of your smile, which are sent to a trusted local lab for the crafting of your custom crown or bridge.

Making your permanent restoration can take about two weeks. A temporary crown or bridge will be placed until your permanent appliance is ready. Once your custom restoration is complete, we will invite you back to our Tigard office to place your permanent crown or bridge.

Does My Crown or Bridge Need Special Care?

Surprisingly no! You can treat your new crown or bridge just as you would a natural tooth. This means you should maintain healthy habits and consistent oral hygiene. Be sure to brush twice a day and floss daily. Rinsing with mouthwash is always a good idea to remove leftover food particles and bacteria. As always, visit our office for your dental cleaning and exam every six months.

How Long will My Crown or Bridge Last?

Crowns and bridges can last anywhere from five to 15 years. However, they could last longer with proper care and strong oral hygiene. To help get the most out of your restoration, avoid things like biting your nails, grinding your teeth, and using your teeth as tools. These habits can damage your crown or bridge, which may require replacement.
